Half Cut Film Festival
A major part of the On The Rocks Festival, Half Cut showcases the best in Scottish Student Film.
While there are plenty of great (and not so great) films being made by students all over Scotland, we still lack a widely recognised forum to showcase them to the public. Half Cut aims to legitimise student film, and give professionals the chance to see up-and-coming talent.
This year, our judging panel will consist of animators from PIXAR Animation Studios, a BAFTA award winner and St Andrew's University Rector. Our distinguished guests will also give a presentation and Q&A session (possibly showing never-before-seen clips from Pixar!!), providing our film makers and audience with a chance to meet industry professionals.
Half Cut in recent years has seen gritty drama, musicals in miniature, ninjas on swings, claymation and full lobster costumes. This year will be no exception, come join us for our black tie Awards Evening at the NPH Cinema on THURSDAY APRIL 22 for a star-spangled, red-carpeted evening.
There will also be a People's Choice evening on MONDAY APRIL 19 which will be a screening of selected films that were submitted. The audience's vote at the end will then decide the last entry for the Half Cut Award evening.
Tickets are now available online at http://www.ontherocksfestival.com/box-office.html, and outside the University of St Andrews Library from 11am-3pm from Monday 19th to Thursday 22nd. If there are any tickets left, we will sell them at the door on the night.

2010 Winners!
Rogue Productions would like to thank our judges, our audience, and all film makers who contributed to the festival. The winners of Half Cut Film Festival 2010 were:
Best Film: Unrealistic Expectations About Love (Directed and Produced by Julz Newton)
Two people meet by chance at a house party, fall in love and live happily ever after. Unfortunately, the path to true love is not always a smooth one…
Director’s Biography:
This film is the first proper project for me, as a writer, director, producer and editor. I looked upon it as an experiment of ideas that could be applied to the practicalities of filmmaking. I learnt a lot from this project, mostly from mistakes that were made! But I would always encourage someone to go out and try, rather than hold back because they might fail.

Best Screenplay: Dog's Dinner (Directed by Ian Robertson, Produced by Jule Rozite)
In 1856 Reverend William Buckland, the great British paleontologist, passed away. However, his passion for eating meat reached beyond the grave. ‘Dog’s Dinner’ is a black comedy about an old man, whose reverence for the reverend has given him one aim in life; to taste the flesh of every type of animal in existence. Eating one particular type of animal, however, proves to be a trifle more difficult…
Director’s Biography:
Born in Oxfordshire, Ian moved to Glasgow to do an undergrad in Film and TV Studies. He moved to Canada in this third year to do an exchange at Queen’s University. He has been making amateur films since he was a teenager, and he confounded the filmmaking society at Glasgow University. After running courses in 16mm filmmaking for the members, he decided to shoot Dog’s Dinner on his 1969 Bolex in an effort to promote 16mm filmmaking in Glasgow.
